A Christmas Tale (2008). Superb film about a troubled French family gathering for what may be their final Christmas together. Sublimely acted and directed, this honest, penetrating study of complex family dynamics never veers off course on its way to the shattering final scene between the mother and the estranged son. Not to be missed. In French, with subtitles...

The trailer doesn't do the film justice, but here it is:

Okay, I definitely need to find that movie! We have Christmas movie traditions in my family; the general family tradition is Jean Shepherd's A Christmas Story ("You'll shoot your eye out!"), and my personal tradition is to watch Joyeux Noel (about the Christmas Truce of 1914) on Christmas Eve. This movie looks like a good candidate for traditionhood.

We got it through Netflix. We first saw it last year when it was released in the States. Both of us were a little afraid that we remembered it as being better than it is, but our fears were groundless. If anything, we liked A Christmas Tale better the second time through.

A Christmas Story is a classic! I'm a big fan of Holiday Inn, with Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. Another good old one is Remember the Night, with Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck. We'll add Joyeux Noel to the queue!

DeNiro's new Christmas movie Everyone is Fine, is very good. Not great as the movies you talk about, still very good.

I've heard that the DeNiro film is good. We're definitely going to try and catch it.
