Cindy Walker (1918-2006)

The pride of Mexia, Texas, wrote country-and-western songs for Bob Wills, Bing Crosby, Eddie Arnold, Roy Orbison, Jim Reeves, Ricky Skaggs, Mickey Gilley, and many others.

Her most beloved song, "You Don't Know Me," was co-written with Arnold and recorded by him, Ray Charles, Mickey Gilley, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Presley, Lenny Welch and Jerry Vale. Here, Emmylou Harris sings "You Don't Know Me" with assistance from (right to left) Trisha Yearwood, Carlene Carter, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Shelby Lynne:

Eddie "The Tennessee Plowboy" Arnold recorded "You Don't Know Me" in 1955:

Hmmmm... It looks like I've heard songs Cindy Walker wrote, but never heard of her specifically.

Nice Emmy version. I think the first version I heard of this was the Ray Charles one. And I could swear I heard a Chet Atkins version, too.

She's legendary in Texas -- must have written fifty songs for Bob Wills. Willie Nelson recently recorded an album of all Cindy Walker songs.

Spade Cooley -- the Los Angeles Bob Wills -- and his band play "Miss Molly" here. Spade wasn't bad, but notice how stiff his rendition sounds compared with Bob Wills (here).

Being from the great stae of Ten-uh-see, I'm sure I heard it from Eddy first but my favorite by a thousand miles was/is Ray Charles.

Will have to do some checking to see what else she wrote because I don't recognize her name either - but I can't even remember the artists half the time!

More blog problems. My PC quit on me so I am using my Mac laptop and I can't play the videos.

I reported my blog woe of not entering when I post on other blogs. This is a glitch they are working on. Sure they are!

Cindy walker was a great songwriter--Cherokee Maiden, Sugar Moon, Miss Molly, Warm Red Wine, Blue Canadian Rockies, Dream Baby, to name just a few. Bob Wills & Texas Playboys recorded a lot of her songs. & she could sing, too: check out her version of "When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again" here

Dream Baby is one fine fine song -- I love Roy Orbison's rendition, but you wouldn't know that - CAUSE YOU DON"T KNOW ME! :-)

tnlib: Ray's version is great, but when Emmylou sings that she "never knew the art of making love..." It probably helps to be a guy!

Darlene: Good luck. You're missing out!

John: Too bad she didn't pursue a recording career -- that husky voice is very nice. I like the Hawaiian-style steel guitar.

TD: I know Roy's version well. I've probably seen him perform it!

Beautiful. and nice to see Shelby Lynne get a mention too

Shelby is terrific -- I've really gotten into her since Just A Little Lovin'. Anyone who could hold her own singing a set of Dusty Springfield songs commands my attention!
