Speaking of which. Trust Citizen K. on this one: You haven't been on an open stretch of road until you've driven 10 across West Texas, southern New Mexico, and south central Arizona. (Australians may beg to differ.)...

Jennifer Warnes on Leonard Cohen: "His father was a tailor, a clothier...This is an integral part of how Leonard assembles a song..."
Thea Gilmore is a favorite singer-songwriter of mine; Liejacker was one of the top releases of 2008. Her low, knowing voice bespoke a familiarity with experience that she conveyed through lyrics like "you've got needles in your eyes from all the glances that you stole" or this verse from "The Lower Road," Liejacker's predictably great duet with Joan Baez:
There's no telling which way, boys, this is thing is going to take hold
From the fruit on a poplar tree, to the bruise round a band of gold
From the blood in a far country, to the war of just growing old
We travel a lower road, and it's lonely and it is cold
Gilmore wraps her words in a pretty package, too, as can be heard in the melodies to "Old Soul" and many others. Her new CD, Murphy's Heart," is scheduled for release on August 30.

Here, she explains the back story to "Old Soul" before performing it in the Sun Record studios:

I didn't know about Thea Gilmore, but I can definitely hear what you like--great song, great voice. Speaking of B Dylan--I'm off in the next half hour to hear him in Boise tonight at the Idaho Botanical Gardens.

All right! That sounds like a terrific venue, too. You won't be disappointed. Set list, please!

Calvin has a good point about yo-yos. And Ruben's entry this week is so on target!

I've never heard of Thea Gilmore before; she's definitely worth listening to some more. Thanks for the introduction.

Love, love, love your choice of comics. I'm beginning to look forward to Sundays. I hope you don't stop with this post.

I never heard of Thea Gilmore but even with my limited hearing ability I can tell she has a beautiful voice. I also loved the recording on the previous post. Herbie Hancock is a favorite of mine and this was a great recording. Yes, I'll say "Wow !!!"

Roy: Calvin says it for me, too! I'm good at getting a yo-yo to go down; coming back is a different matter. Remember the Duncan Yo-Yo champions? Thea is a treasure -- I got Liejacker on the strength of a review; it's still in rotation.

Darlene: Thanks! I want to keep this post going come Republicans or high water! Hard to think of Herbie H. at 70. The 60s sessions with Miles amaze even today.

NM: We aim to please! You have some serious songwriter talent in Australia. I keep hoping that Paul Kelly will head an Australian Invasion tour of the States with talents like Shane Nicholson and Annie McCue. Pass this request on to Paul, will you?

Thea Gilmore - what a find! Thanks for the tip! I love her voice...

A friend many years ago told me about how her young son would tell her stories of "before...before I was in your belly" and he regaled her with things his young 5 year old mind surely couldn't comprehend much less make up.

It was weird.

CP: There's no explanation for things like that, at least that our little brains can conceive. I'm glad you like Thea -- she's impressive. Check out her cover of Bad Moon Rising sometime. It will give you chills.
