Great Endings: Catch-22

Yossarian jumped. Nately's whore was hiding just outside the door. The knife came down, missing him by inches, and he took off.

Catch-22, Joseph Heller

Things are going to slide, slide in all directions...

Another great song from Leonard Cohen. Did all the clips you've been posting this week come from this 1993 Canadian show? They at least seem to all be from the same period.

Thanks for that memory. One of the best character names in all of fiction:

Major Major Major.

Even better: It was Major Major Major Major! I used to know the passage the passage where his father named him by heart. Something like "Lesser might have settled for such perfectly good substitutes as Sergeant Major or C Sharp Major. Not Major Major's father."

The major bore a sickly resemblance to Henry Fonda. In the film, Mike Nichols cast Bob Newhart in the role; Newhart arguably does bear a sickly resemblance to Henry Fonda!

Leonard Cohen is the sexiest man alive. Next to Ian McShane of course

Roy, a couple of the clips come from his 1988 Austin City Limits appearance.

NM, if you haven't seen it, check out the miniseries War and Remembrance, the sequel to Winds of War. It's from the mid-80s, and McShane has a significant role in the early episodes as a dashing, intrepid, and womanizing war correspondent.
