And I Quote

"[People] are fed up -- frustrated and fed up and angry about the way in which our government does not work. And I think the filibuster has become not only in reality an obstacle to accomplishment here, but it is also a symbol of a lot that ails Washington today."

Quick, who said this? Was it Bill Clinton, frustrated by the Republican intransigence that blocked even minor appointments? Maybe Barack Obama in an unguarded moment, worried that a few small-state senators stood in the way of health care reform? Guess again: It was Holy Joe Lieberman who, back in 1994, introduced legislation to reform the filibuster. Today, of course, this unalloyed hypocrite threatens to use the filibuster to deny health care access to 35,000,000 of his fellow Americans. Christopher Hayes of The Nation has more here about the most undemocratic practice of our most undemocratic institution...

Calvin Trillin skewers Lieberman here...

Thoughtfulness. Sometimes, a girl just can't win...

Great find! He is such the creature of convenience...Lieberman has no spine and simply goes where the money blows strongest. I still don't see why we continue to let him man a committee like that...Nice work, K.!

Does anybody actually still listen to Lieberman? I think even his constituency in CT have forgotten he's there.

Is there a bigger blowhard in the Senate than Holy Joe? And that's saying something.

Scrumpy, I'm glad you checked it out. PWALLY always has a funny story to tell.

Botton line: the unspeakable lieberman and his equally unspeakable wife have received at least 1.5 million a year, for at least a decade and half, from the 'health' insurance industry.

These monies are separate, of course, from the millions he receives from the Israeli warmonger lobbyists.

Of course he'd filibuster.

If he were the only one, or only one among a few, he/they could be dealt with. But he's just one among many if not most senators who get at least a million a year from the lobbyists for the 'health' industry, the Israeli warmongering industries, the banking and finance industries, the agri industries and so on.

One begins to understand why the French Revolution believed the only solution was tumbrells.

And he has the gall to say that he opposes a public option as a matter of conscience. He is really a piece of work.

Connecticut has Holy Joe and Michigan has Holy Stupak. I am so tired of legislators like these two. They have the best health care taxpayer money can provide, but yet they're playing games with the well-being of millions of Americans. It's disgusting.

(Sorry to hear about the wrist. I hope your therapy goes well and you're back to normal soon. )
