Mayo North Tractor Club Vintage Fair

Yesterday, we journeyed north to the Vintage Fair outside of Crossmolina. The Vintage Fair consists of antique sellers (I picked up some not-so-antique post cards from the '70's), craftspeople; demonstrations of country skills such as blacksmithing, metalworking, dogs herding, and even poteen making; music; vintage cars and steam engines; you name it.

Blacksmith at work:

Border collie herding ducks:

1955 Morris Oxford:

Metalworker:

1920 butter churn:

Threshing contest:

Well look at that - Morris made a "Woody"! I didn't know that particular design phenomenon had jumped the Big Pond.

I have a friend who considers Border Collies the smartest living beings on the face of the earth, even smarter than Dolphins (which leaves humans at a distant 4th or 5th place, heh, heh).

The first weekend in October every year the Norman Bird Sanctuary has their annual Harvest Fair, which has much of this kind of thing. While they don't have a threshing competition, they do show vintage tractors. There's also a greased pole and a mud pit.

Sometimes life is like climbing a greased pole until you fall into a mud pit!

K- your Odyssey is a treat to behold. My neighbor's sister is a missionary Catholic nun who has been reassigned from Central America to Dublin. We are hoping she has room for 8 at the abbey ! I never saw anything but border collies there, where the hell did they come up with Irish Setters anyway ? Enjoy the old sod my friend, I know I am through your pictures...

Rasta: Thanks a lot, man. I really hope you get over here. The feeling of connectedness is profound. I recommend that everyone go to the country of their roots at some time during their life, just for that reason.

Working class dogs working -- one of my favorites, along with working class dogs doing agility courses.

Aren't those geese, not ducks? Or a particularly long-necked duck?

Love, c.

I thought geese myself, but the handler called them ducks.
